Jonathan Guthrie

Jonathan Guthrie is an award-winning journalist, writer and consultant. He worked at the Financial Times newspaper (1996-2024), latterly as associate editor and head of Lex, the daily investment column. He previously held the posts of City Editor, Enterprise Editor and UK Companies Editor.

He is currently pursuing a portfolio career. He is a member of  the Oversight Group of the Church Commissioners’ reparatory fund and sits on the International Advisory Council of Apco, a Washington DC-based political and communications consultancy. He is writing a book on investment due for publication by Pearson next year and is a columnist on nature and the environment for the FT and British Wildlife. He also provides strategic analysis for private clients.

At the FT, Jonathan led three important investigations into financial irregularities, two of which were followed by the delisting of the FTSE100 businesses involved. He was awarded the titles Campaigning Journalist of the Year 2023 (WTW Awards) for columns on Ukraine and Outstanding Contribution to Journalism 2023 (State Street Awards) for critiques of short selling and carried interest taxation. He created the FT’s award-winning Carbon Counter series quantifying household CO2 output and the FT’s daily City newsletter.

Earlier in his career Jonathan edited the magazines Pensions Management and Professional Investor, wrote for International Financing Review and The Economist, and worked for a year as a development volunteer in rural India. He has a degree in English Literature from Nottingham University.
